Insights Court of Justice of European Union to anonymise requests for preliminary rulings involving natural persons.

Following the coming into effect of the GDPR, the CJEU has decided that, to ensure the protection of the data of natural persons involved in requests for a preliminary ruling (while guaranteeing that citizens are informed and have the right to access open courts) in all requests for preliminary rulings brought after 1 July 2018, it will replace the name of natural persons involved in the case by initials in all public documents. Similarly, any additional element likely to permit identification of the persons concerned will be removed.

The measures apply to CJEU publications only and do not affect the way in which cases are handled by the court, the usual progress of proceedings or hearings, which will continue to follow the current arrangements. To read the CJEU press release in full, click here.
