Insights Ofcom publishes consultation on proposals to help customers of landline, broadband and pay TV services switch from one network to another with greater ease and confidence.

Ofcom has found that people can face particular problems when switching between providers whose services are delivered using different networks.  Ofcom is therefore proposing to help consumers switch landline, broadband and pay TV services, either in isolation or as a “bundle”, between companies using the Openreach telecoms network, KCOM in Hull, Virgin Media cable and Sky satellite.

Ofcom is consulting on two alternative options.  Its preferred option is to place responsibility for the coordination of the switch entirely in the hands of a customer’s new provider.  Ofcom is also seeking views on an enhanced version of the existing arrangements for switching between networks.  The consultation closes on 21 October 2016.

Separately, Ofcom is also consulting on the proposed introduction of new rules to reduce the number of mobile customers who are charged after the date they switch their service to a new provider.  This consultation closes on 16 September 2016.  To read Ofcom’s press release and for links to the consultations, click here.
