HomeInsightsEuropean Parliament adopts plan to keep Horizon 2020 EU funding for UK in “no deal” Brexit scenario

The European Parliament’s decision is contingent on the UK paying its share into the EU budget during this period.

The decision will affect not only UK researchers, but also students and farmers who will continue to get EU support in the event of a “no deal” Brexit.

The European Parliament’s draft recommendation extends the contingency plan, which was previously limited to 2019, to 2020.

The aim is to minimise any negative impact that the UK’s withdrawal may have on beneficiaries of EU funding and on the EU budget in the case of a “no deal” scenario. The measure includes not only Horizon 2020, but Erasmus+ and agriculture and regional policies as well.

The proposal would make it possible to continue payments to UK beneficiaries throughout 2020, provided the UK continues to pay its contributions and accepts the necessary controls and audits.

The draft recommendation, endorsing the approval of the proposal, was adopted with 543 votes in favour, 30 against, and 46 abstentions. To read the European Parliament’s press release in full, click here.
