HomeInsightsCouncil of EU approves Data Governance Act

Following approval of the new Data Governance Act (DGA) by the European Parliament, the Council has now also approved the text.

As previously reported in Need to Know, the DGA will set up robust mechanisms intended to (i) facilitate the reuse of certain categories of protected public sector data; (ii) increase trust in data intermediation services; and (iii) foster data altruism across the EU.

The Council says that it is an important component of the European strategy for data, which aims to bolster the data economy. The new Act will come into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the EU. The new rules will apply 15 months after the Act’s entry into force.
