Insights Roaming charges: Commission withdraws consultation on end of roaming charges.

Following the Commission’s statement last week on the abolition of roaming charges as of June 2017 and publication of a consultation on the draft measures to achieve this, the Commission has withdrawn the consultation “in light of initial feedback”.  President Juncker instructed the text to be withdrawn and requested that the Commission “work on a new proposal”.

When the European Parliament and the Council agreed to the Commission’s proposal to abolish roaming charges, they asked the Commission to define measures to prevent roaming services from being used for other reasons than periodic travelling (the so-called “fair use policy”). The Commission says simply that a new proposal “will be presented soon”. To read the Commission’s press release, click here.
