Insights TV Licence Fee Regulations laid before Parliament

The Communications (Television Licensing)(Amendment) Regulations 2024 were laid before Parliament on 19 February 2024 and will come into force on 1 April 2024. These Regulations amend the Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004 (2004/692) by providing for increases in the amount payable for most categories of TV licence and the amount of each instalment for certain categories of TV licence which can be paid in instalments. The amount usually payable for a colour TV licence is increased from £159.00 to £169.50 and that for a black and white TV licence is increased from £53.50 to £57.00.

In 2022, the Government decided to freeze the level of the TV licence fees for two years after which (starting on 1 April 2024) the fees would rise by the level of inflation for the following four years. However, in December 2023, the Government announced that, while fees would go up on 1 April 2024, it would not be by as much as it had stated in 2022 (previously reported by Wiggin). The increases set out in the Regulations therefore reflect the new basis on which the increases are calculated as per the December announcement.

The new Regulations will apply to TV licences issued on or after 1 April 2024.
