Insights Ofcom publishes changes to broadcast licence conditions

Ofcom has published changes to its TV, radio and multiplex broadcast licence conditions following a public consultation. The changes reflect the new requirements of the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive (2018/1888/EU), which amends certain provisions of the AVMS Directive (2010/13/EU), and the UK Government’s implementation of it. The amendments also reflect changes to the licensing framework which will take effect following the end of the transition period for the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. Both sets of changes apply to television broadcast licence conditions.

More generally, Ofcom is also making changes to its broadcast licence conditions to make them easier to use and understand and to deliver more effective, consistent and timely enforcement.

Ofcom says that it will complete work to vary television broadcast licences to reflect these changes by the end of 2020. Work to vary radio and multiplex licences will commence thereafter. To read Ofcom’s statement in full, click here.
