The Commissioner’s response focused on highlighting the relevant upcoming work that her office will be undertaking in the area of data protection and journalism in accordance with duties conferred on her under the Data Protection Act 2018.

The Commissioner noted that under the DPA she has specific responsibilities in relation to journalism. She is required to produce a statutory code of practice providing practical guidance in relation to the use of personal data for the purposes of journalism and separate guidance on seeking redress against media organisations. In addition, she is required, after an initial four-year period, to undertake a review of the processing of personal data for the purposes of journalism. Subsequent reviews will take place every five years.

The Commissioner said that these pieces of work “are being prioritised by the ICO” and that she believes they will help contribute to ensuring the continuation of high-quality journalism in the UK. To read the Commissioner’s response in full, click here.
