The Government explains that forecasts suggest that the average UK household contains fifteen consumer Internet of Things or “smart” devices. However, a significant proportion of the devices currently on the UK market lack basic cyber security provisions.

The Government wants consumers to have confidence in the many smart devices they buy and use and product assurance schemes play an important role. Typically, they provide consumers with an assurance label or kite mark that demonstrates that the product has undergone independent testing or a robust and accredited self-assessment process. In a sector where consumers overwhelmingly assume that devices are secure because they are for sale, these assurance schemes are vital in enabling consumers to make security-conscious purchasing decisions. In addition, feedback from these assurance schemes can help manufacturers to improve their product.

In order to catalyse uptake of good cyber security practice as contained within the Code of Practice for IoT Security and the industry standard ETSI EN 303 645, DCMS has launched a grant-making programme to support the development of industry-led assurance schemes for consumer IoT security.

Eligible organisations are invited to apply for funding as per the instructions set out in the application pack. Funding available through this programme is time-limited and must conclude by 31 March 2021. The grant programme is open for applications from 29 May to 30 June 2020.
