HomeExpertiseDigital Services Act

We are living in an increasingly digital world. The rise of online platforms over the past few decades has had a huge impact on the media sector, consumers, the economy and even on democracy.

The current EU legislative framework has contributed to the growth of European digital services but, according to the European Commission, it does not provide answers to many of today’s pressing questions on the role and responsibilities of online platforms.

The EU’s answer to this is the Digital Services Act (DSA), a legislative framework which the European Commission intends as means of strengthening the Single Market for digital services by updating the legal framework established by the 2000 E-Commerce Directive.

The DSA is expected to lay down rules surrounding the responsibilities of digital service providers, particularly to what extent they are liable for the content, products and services made available by their users.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) will also be introduced as part of the framework and is expected to address the issue of a level playing field in European digital markets, through rules which ensure fair competition in markets where there are large ‘gatekeeper’ platforms.

The DSA is expected to be the most significant intervention in the digital single market in recent times. We have put together this DSA Hub so that you can easily stay up to date with all of the latest news and navigate the potential impact on your business.
