HomeInsightsOfcom consults on the BBC’s request to change its operating licence requirements for children

Ofcom is seeking views on its provisional decision to change the BBC’s operating licence to allow it to provide more content for children online.

This follows a request from the BBC, which plans to increase the provision of children’s news through the Newsround website, and provide more new children’s content on BBC iPlayer.

Given shifts in children’s media habits, Ofcom says that it agrees that it makes sense for the BBC to provide more children’s content online. This may help the BBC to better engage with its youngest audiences, who are critical to its future success.

Ofcom says that it is therefore minded to accept the BBC’s request, but is also proposing additional safeguards. These would help ensure that the BBC maintains the quality of its linear children’s channels, and that the impact of its online plans is carefully monitored.

Ofcom is seeking views from interested or affected parties by 13 December 2019, before making its final decision. To access the consultation, click here.
