HomeInsightsGovernment publishes consultation, “Transparency in digital campaigning: technical consultation on digital imprints”

The Government is consulting on its proposals for making online political campaigning more transparent. The proposals would mean that political parties, campaigners and others must explicitly show who they are when promoting campaign content online.

In 2019, the Government committed to introducing a digital imprints regime following feedback from the consultation “Protecting the Debate: Intimidation, Influence, and Information”, which indicated broad support for the idea. The Government says that it has engaged intensively with stakeholders on how to put this into practice and the consultation outlines the technical rules for how the regime would operate.

The consultation is aimed at voters, political parties, social media and technology companies, prospective or elected representatives and civil society organisations throughout the UK. The deadline for responses is 4 November 2020. To access the consultation, click here.
