In response to the publication of the Government’s Online Harms White Paper (see item above), the Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said that the proposals “reflect people’s growing mistrust of social media and online services”. People are “increasingly questioning how much control they have of what they see, and how their information is used. That relationship needs repairing, and regulation can help that”.

Ms Denham said that while this “important debate unfolds, her office will “continue to take action”, using its powers under data protection law to “act decisively where people’s information is being misused online”, and its specific powers to “ensure firms are accountable to the people whose data they use”.

Ms Denham highlighted the action taken already and said that she and the ICO “see the current focus on online harms as complementary to our work, and look forward to participating in discussions regarding the White Paper”. To read Ms Denham’s response in full, click here.
