HomeInsightsInformation Commissioner’s Office commences statutory review on how personal data is processed for the purposes of journalism

The new ICO review is a statutory review under s 178 of the Data Protection Act 2018. The ICO says that it will help it understand how the media industry has been using and complying with personal information since the new data protection laws came into effect in May 2018.

The ICO is keen to hear from journalists and data protection professionals in the news and media sectors through an online questionnaire, which should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete. It welcomes participation from large and small organisations, as well as freelancers and independent professionals.

The questions in the online questionnaire are around universal data protection themes, including data sharing, governance, records management, remote working and security.

The deadline for response is 30 September 2022. To access the review questionnaire, click here.
