We are proud to announce that Danielle Sharkey has co-authored a chapter on bribery, corruption and sport for the fourth edition of Lissack and Horlick on Bribery and Corruption, published by LexisNexis UK.
The chapter explores the many forms corruption can take in sport, from match-fixing and match manipulation to insider information, “ghost matches” and courtsiding, and considers why the globalisation of sport, significant investment and the growth of online betting have made integrity risks increasingly complex.
It also looks beyond the field of play, considering governance and bidding scandals, the role and limits of sports governing bodies, and the extent to which English law – including the Bribery Act 2010, the Gambling Act 2005 and the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 – can be used to tackle misconduct.
Drawing on case law, international examples and practical enforcement tools, the chapter highlights the challenges facing regulators, sports organisations and those advising them, and makes the case for clearer, more targeted mechanisms to address corruption in modern sport.
