The Commission says that the Privacy Flag project develops an innovative methodology, the Universal Privacy Risk Area Assessment Methodology, to assess the compliance of applications, websites, and the Internet of Things with the new General Data Protection Regulation, which comes into force in May 2018. The project has launched a new set of tools for European citizens and companies, including a privacy certification scheme. Privacy Flag is a European research project co-funded by the European Commission and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation.

A first version of tools for European citizens is now available on the Privacy Flag website. The new tools include:

  • a browser add-on to assess if a website is compliant or not with the GDPR;
  • a smartphone app to assess if applications installed on a smartphone or an aspect of the Internet are compliant or not with the GDPR;
  • an online observatory with information on privacy threats for users;
  • a privacy guide setting out relevant resources to better protect privacy, such as privacy friendly search engines; and
  • a Privacy Portal.

Other tools have been developed to support companies in complying with the GDPR, including a certification scheme on data protection. For further information and for links to some of the tools, click here.
