The 2008 Digital Music Survey, conducted by Entertainment Media Research and supported by Wiggin, makes encouraging reading at a time when it’s most needed. Of course it’s not all good news, but there is evidence that consumers are still willing to pay a reasonable sum for music, or for access to music, if the package is right.

Following his success in the High Court against the News of the World, Max Mosley is reported to be considering a challenge to the European Court of Human Rights for a change in the law that would make it compulsory for newspapers to inform the subject of stories that there is a possibility of their publishing private information about them.

The recent settlement of Salman Rushdie's libel claim against his former bodyguard, Richard Evans, following the bodyguard's inclusion of a number of false allegations in a book about his experiences with Mr Rushdie took a different approach to the usual manner of resolving a complaint. Instead of seeking damages, the claimant sought a retraction of the falsehoods contained in the book.

Commenting on the ongoing dispute between online book retailer Amazon and Hachette Livre, which has seen Amazon.co.uk remove the "Buy New" option for certain Hachette titles, media and competition lawyers have disputed the idea that Amazon is at risk of committing an abuse of a dominant position. Amazon's decision to remove the option forces customers to navigate to an open marketplace that links them to third-party sellers of new or used books and pay for shipping.
